A Santa Teresa hotel wasn’t always the plan—but the town made it hard to resist.
When we opened Sendero in Nosara, we set out to build something rooted in the rhythm of Playa Guiones. Surrounded by jungle, just steps from one of the most consistent surf breaks in the world, Sendero was designed to feel calm, connected, and welcoming—whether you came to surf, work remotely, or slow down. We didn’t plan to open a second hotel right away. But then we found Santa Teresa.
It had that same pull.
A Town That Shares Our Values
Santa Teresa, like Nosara, isn’t just beautiful—it attracts people who are there with purpose. The surf, the natural beauty, the wellness culture, the sense of community: it all felt familiar, but with its own energy.
There’s something about Santa Teresa that feels both grounded and vibrant. It’s more linear than Nosara, running along a coastal road, which gives it a buzzy, beach-town feel. But it’s also surrounded by wild nature, and full of quiet corners if you know where to look.
Just like Nosara, Santa Teresa draws travelers who care about living well—through movement, food, design, and simplicity. That alignment made it a clear next step.
A New Energy, A Familiar Approach
We didn’t want to replicate Sendero in a different location. We wanted to create something that matched the spirit of Santa Teresa in its own way.
Fermata was built to reflect this place—modern yet natural, refined but easygoing. The rooms are steps from the sand, surrounded by palms and sounds of the sea. Every detail was designed to help guests slow down and land fully in the moment.
Where Sendero is lush and tucked into the jungle, Fermata is more open, more ocean-facing as it sits in front of Santa Teresa Beach’s La Lora. But both share the same foundation: intentional design, relaxed luxury, and a commitment to hospitality that’s personal, not performative.
A Natural Fit for Movement and Wellness
Santa Teresa already had a strong surf culture and a growing wellness community. From day one, it felt like the kind of place where people came not just to vacation, but to reconnect with nature, with themselves, with each other.
At Fermata, we leaned into that. We built a wellness center that supports daily movement and mindfulness, and we created Chorotegas, our in-house surf school, to offer guided experiences rooted in awareness and joy, not just performance. Like at Sendero, the goal is to offer structure and support if you want it, freedom if you don’t.
For Those Who Want to Explore Both
Many of our guests in Nosara ask where else in Costa Rica feels similar. And many travelers fall in love with both towns (check out our blog post to find out why here). While each place has its own character, they make an incredible pairing—Santa Teresa with its livelier beach-town energy, Nosara with its more tucked-away, contemplative pace.
Together, they offer two ways to experience Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula—both built around intention, wellness, and the kind of travel that leaves you feeling more like yourself.
Fermata Hotel is our next chapter, but the story stays the same: thoughtful design, meaningful experiences, and space to breathe. We’re excited to welcome you.
