(The Quality Edit) When traveling with a partner or friend, the biggest things to consider are space and privacy. Being in 200 square feet doesn’t always lend for much of either, but there’s a variety of layouts to consider. Additionally, some offer a more insular experience with a tiny kitchenette, while others are similar to a hotel room and meals are enjoyed at an on-property restaurant. Much like a camper, others offer a bedroom and supplementary sleeping arrangements for those bringing kiddies along.
If you just simply are not outdoorsy, you can still indulge in the tiny cabin — or casita — trip. This is for those with a preference towards beachfront stays.
Hotel Fermata just opened in 2025 year. With a variety of room options their casitas feel closer to a hotel room than the others on the list. They’re spacious with private outdoor showers and air-conditioned abodes with enough space for pocket doors to separate the foyer and the bedroom. These petite retreats are excellent for anyone from surfers to those who want to start their day with a little yoga.
The property has four-wheelers for exploring Santa Teresa, but it’s located directly on the La Lora surf — one of the most renowned surf locales in Costa Rica. Their open-air restaurant is open all day from breakfast through dinner. While you may not be enjoying the view from in bed like some of the other spots, being just steps from the beach is nothing to deter you.
Bigger is not always better. A travel adventure and amazing hospitality experience can come in any size or shape. If you’ve never stayed in a petite retreat, now you know what to look for and the diverse options to consider.
