Travel tips from San José, Liberia, and beyond Costa Rica.

Santa Teresa sits a little off the beaten path, and that’s exactly what makes it special. The journey here is part of the experience. By the time you arrive, you’re already in it. Whether you’re arriving from San José, Liberia, or coming down the coast from Sendero, our sister hotel in Nosara, there are a few well-worn paths that lead you to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.

Below is a simple guide to help you choose the route that best fits your travel style, timing, and appetite for adventure.

From San José (SJO)

San José is the biggest international airport in Costa Rica and offers the widest range of connections.

Domestic flight + short drive
For the quickest arrival from SJO, many travelers choose a domestic flight from San José to Cobano. The flight is short and scenic, tracing the coastline and jungle below. From Cobano, it’s about a 45-minute drive to Santa Teresa.

This is the best option if you’re short on time or prefer to skip a long car journey. You can find domestic flights on Sansa or Green Airways. You can also always reach out to Fermata directly to inquire about a charter flight.

Drive (with ferry crossing)
Driving from San José takes approximately 5–6 hours, depending on traffic and ferry timing. The route includes a ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera, followed by a drive south through the peninsula.

It’s a longer journey, but a scenic and memorable one, especially if you enjoy road trips, being on your own time and discovering more of Costa Rica along the way.

Shuttle van
Shared and private shuttle vans run regularly from San José to Santa Teresa. This is one of the most relaxed ways to arrive, allowing you to take in the scenery without navigating unfamiliar roads. Travel time is the same as driving, but with far less effort. Reach out to Fermata, and we’ll be happy to arrange your shuttle.

From Liberia (LIR)

Liberia is another convenient arrival point, particularly if you’re coming from North America, and from December through April, has many flight options.

Drive
The drive from Liberia to Santa Teresa takes around 4–5 hours and passes through Guanacaste before winding down the Nicoya Peninsula. It’s a scenic route that offers a good balance of paved roads and quieter stretches.

Shuttle van
Shuttle services are also available from Liberia and are a popular option for guests who want a straightforward, comfortable journey. Again, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team to help you book this.

Domestic flight
Depending on schedules, you may also find domestic flights connecting Liberia and on to Cobano. While less frequent than the direct domestic flights from San José, it’s worth checking if timing aligns.
